I agree there is no reason to time the feed. There is reason to assess the feed, although this has never been a requirement of BF USA. AAP recommends breastfeeding assessments, and this can be done by any number of validated scoring systems: LATCH, MBA, IBFAT.

At NICHQ, we're proud to celebrate breastfeeding awareness through World Breastfeeding Week and National Breastfeeding Month. These observances come on the heels of a report detailing impressive results from Best Fed Beginnings, a NICHQ-led, groundbreaking national initiative to help hospitals improve breastfeeding-related maternity care and increase the number of Baby-Friendly hospitals in the U.S. Learn more from our report about the change concepts we implemented and then share ideas you have to try in your facility. http://nichq.org/blog/2015/august/breastfeeding_month_bfb_results Expand

Rebekka Henriksen is the Mother Chair for the New York State Breastfeeding Quality Improvement in Hospitals (BQIH) Collaborative. She helps participating hospital teams connect with and utilize their local parent partners. At times, however, hospital teams struggle with the why’s (why is this role important) and how’s (how can a parent, and more specifically, a mother partner contribute to the implementation of the 10 Steps to Successful Breastfeeding). http://nichq.org/blog/2015/august/rebekka_henriksen Expand

We received a question about jaundice in exclusively breastfed babies. Dr. Lori Feldman-Winter responded: "With implementation of the ten steps, especially skin to skin fully implemented, breastfeeding is more likely to get off to a successful start. This in turn will make it more likely that suckling is more effective and often, two conditions that decrease the likelihood of severe hyperbilirubinemia. The weight is one parameter, but a more sensitive predictor is the frequency of effective suckling." Expand

It is better if your hospital only supplies them for painful procedures. If pacifiers are provided by parent request they should be obtained by the families.

I asked our purchasing department several times for the proof of payment documentation. once they finally responded to me, I don't think it took them long to compile it...as in, less than 1 day. I work for 1 hospital in a 3 hospital system. I didn't review the receipts closely, but there were receipts from the other hospitals in the documentation we submitted to BFHI. When the surveyor noticed and asked for our campus specific information for certain dates, it took purchasing only seconds to find the correct forms. So, I think it's easier than I originally thought for them to compile all of the documentation!
